Scam Alert | Social Media Housing Rental Scam

By Sandra Grammer

Scammers are creating false rental property listings on Facebook Marketplace. In addition, scammers are asking for bond payments on these fraudulent listings. Once payment has been received, the listing is removed, and the Facebook account is deleted.

  • Use Tenancy Services Bond Lodgement Tool; never transfer the bond directly to the “Landlord” or “Property Manager.”
  • This is highly irregular if payment is requested to a Paypal or similar account.
  • If the rent is too good to be true, it usually is. However, if the asking rent is below market rent, be suspicious.
  • View the property, or sign a rental agreement before lodging any bond.
  • And, of course, use a reputable Property Management Company

Anyone who suspects they have been a victim of a scam should make a report to the police on 105 or visit their local police station.
